lunch in Naples

The cruise didn’t give us much time in Naples, but we were able to enjoy wandering around for at least a little while. This was my second trip to Italy since going gluten-free, and once again, I found it refreshingly easy to deal with my diet despite not being able to eat pasta or pizza. We found a nice little outdoor restaurant where we, of course, ordered way too much food and a carafe of house red.
A simple salad of mozzarella, arugula, basil and tomato with olive oil and balsamic vinegar for drizzling.

Seafood risotto packed with clams, mussels, tomatoes, calamari and my favorite part, perfectly tender octopus.
bk’s pizza – not gluten-free but it sure looked good, even if he told me it was actually just okay. I’m still not sure if he just said that to make me feel better or not.

We also visited the Santa Chiara religious complex, which includes a monastery, a museum and a gorgeous cloister garden. There are also tombs, and several architectural sites still being worked on inside the complex. It was very beautiful and unlike everywhere else we’d been in the city, very calm and peaceful.

Orange and lemon trees in the courtyard of Santa Chiara.
After that, it was time for what quickly became my favorite pastime, the siesta. Many stores and other businesses in the cities we visited, including Marseille, Naples, Genoa and Barcelona, close for a couple of hours in the afternoon. It’s much too hot to do much, so a late afternoon nap in the AC after trekking around under the Mediterranean sun felt like such a luxury. Naps were usually followed by sharing a bottle of wine and some cheese on our balcony and watching the ship leave the port, and sometimes, depending on our timing, a gorgeous sunset greeted us as well.
