I’m taking a photojournalism course right now and I’m learning a heck of a lot, although it’s completely kicking my ass. As a reporter, talking to strangers poses little problem for me, but to go up to a total stranger and ask them if you can take their portrait for 20 minutes for your photo class, well, that’s a lot more difficult. It makes me sweat a little.
This week we’ve been given a respite from shooting people and instead, we have to take a photo of a fruit or vegetable and really give it a personality. Or as my instructor kept saying yesterday in class, “I need you to make me care about that strawberry!” “Why do I care about that apple?”
Right now I’m experimenting with a chayote squash and a large golden beet.
Check out Weston’s pepper still lifes for some inspiration… though your instructor probably referenced that already.
