I’ve been sort of amazed at how the Greek yogurt trend appears to have exploded. Actually, it’s a little overwhelming to me as of late. It seems like every time I got to my local grocery store, there’s a new brand that’s being offered at a special introductory price. And for 89-99 cents, I keep finding myself powerless to resist. I know it’s more economical to buy the big yogurt container, but the small ones are just so much better for taking on the go to class. I’ve tried putting yogurt from the big container into my own small containers, but it always seems to get a little weird. Besides, I save the yogurt cups to send back to the company that makes the toothbrushes I use. Okay, end of tangent and back to Greek yogurt.
On my last trip to the store, I was sort of tempted to purchase a whole basketful of varieties for a Greek yogurt taste-off, but I resisted the urge. Besides, some dude named Tom already did that for me. So did my beloved Serious Eats.
The ones I’ve spotted at my local grocer include:
- Fage (made in upstate New York, as my friend Mike Hill detailed. ) – this one is probably my all-time favorite but it’s also usually the most expensive.
- Dannon Greek Yogurt
- Stonyfield Farms’ Oikos
- Athenos Greek yogurt
- Lucerne Greek yogurt
- Greek Gods
- Open Nature
- Chobani
- Yoplait
- Voskos
- Brown Cow
Cabot -from Vermont…yes that Cabot that makes the great cheddars recently came out with greek yogurt that is available in the local Price Chopper…again expensive. I buy Chobani fat free in a big tub from Sam’s Club and then add my own fruit/flavorings.
